Hungary’s second largest and most densely populated city with 200 thousand inhabitants is located on the northern part of the Great Plain near the Romanian border. It is the economic, intellectual and communication centre of the region beyond the Tisza River.
Like many Hungarian cities, the history of Debrecen developed through many ups and downs: conquerors and landowners, privileges and markets, a moral value system and puritanical lifestyle characterized it over the centuries. The city extends over a large area and was the capital of the country on two occasions in the XIXth and XXth centuries. Numerous important historical events took place here. It is a city of schools of long standing and a large section of the inhabitants are students. Several famous personalities studied at the Debrecen College and they were very attached to the city. The careers of many artists started here and theatre and literature thrive. There are many museums, a gallery and a museum of modern art.
The Calvinist Rome with excellent infrastructure
The city is accessible by highway and train or by air; its international airport has become more and more important in the region. The public transport system consists of trams, trolley buses and buses.
Its location means that the city is wealthy due to agriculture.
Debrecen has been called the Calvinist Rome and is today a vibrant city with an emphasis on cultural and sports events. There are large capacity sports arenas and stadiums and conferences are catered for at the Kölcsey Centre with its large halls and modern technical equipment. There are traditional events in the city, the most striking of which is the Flower Carnival on August 20. Visitors can choose among the new hotels; the inclination to invest in the hotel sector has increased. Business travellers are welcomed by 4 and 5 star hotels. There is a thermal spa and swimming pool in Nagyerdő which is part of the city.
Debrecen, Hajdúszoboszló and Hortobágy: a golden triangle
The region around Debrecen is an exciting voyage of discovery for travellers. Nearby is Hajdúszoboszló, the most important spa resort in Hungary, famous for the local thermal waters. The third point of the ‘golden triangle’ is the magical Hortobágy, the real Hungarian plain or puszta, where the visitor can see traditional, indigenous Hungarian animals and extraordinary birds and enjoy the great peace and quiet. The sky meets the earth, the senses are stirred up by the mirages and it is a pleasure to rest after consuming traditional peasant food. Incentive groups make the puszta suddenly come to life as they enjoy the unforgettable experience of a Puszta Olympiad or an afternoon spent on a horse-drawn cart.
Conferences held here are important to the professionals at the Debrecen University of Arts and Sciences; they bring new contacts and a good reputation to the city.
