Perhaps the best way to describe Eger is as a treasure trove. It is beautiful and mysterious and the discovery of every detail is a delight. It is a historic town that all Hungarians are proud of and it is the location of the great moments in Hungarian history.
The museum of Eger castle is Hungary’s most visited museum. All schoolchildren have been here at least on a school outing or imagined themselves as one of the heroes of the novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon (Egri Csillagok) with its symbolic message for Hungarians. It is a destination that you can never tire of, for there is everything here: exceptional architecture, history, wine districts, Eger Bull’s Blood, a Protected Designation of Origin wine, a huge basilica, underground casemates and a network of cellars, hot springs and baths with a unique water composition, a national park for walking or cycling, streams full of trout, waterfalls, a Lipizzaner stud-farm, theatre and so on. Eger is a destination for outings you never get bored with and now it is also a conference town with modern hotels and meeting halls.
The historic jewel box of Hungary
The town lies in Northern Hungary between the Bükk and Mátra hills and has a population of almost 55 thousand. It is a significant educational and cultural centre.
It can be reached from Budapest most of the way by highway or by train. Public transport consists of local buses.
It is an old episcopal see, thus there are many sights related to the church. In the middle ages it became an important fortress. Visitors are admitted to the beautifully renovated fort standing in the inner town. Besides relics of the Turkish era (the northernmost minaret of the Ottoman Empire is here), the most beautiful buildings date from the baroque age and there are many historic monuments.
Wine and thermal water – a real incentive venue
Eger is a town of wine. Nearby is Hungary’s highest region of vineyards. There are many good Hungarian wines connected with it and a good few famous Hungarian wine makers. A popular destination for events is the row of cellars at the nearby Szalajka valley.
The majority of hotels in Eger have thermal water. But the renovated and newly built hotels claim their share of conference tourism and events both large and small. Meetings for several hundred can be organized in the town, there is plenty of room. Besides meetings, Eger is a real incentive location. The area offers visitors variety and adventure.
