This is the centre of the north-western region of Hungary and the ‘Little Plain’, half way between Budapest and Vienna. It is about an hour away from both Budapest Airport and Schwechat Airport, but also has its own airport.

The renovated Győr-Pér Airport is suitable for large planes, but there are also a sizeable number of business charters and regional freight planes that serve not only the immediate area, but also Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava.

The multi-faceted center of Hungary’s northwest

The city has close to 130 thousand inhabitants and is a significant industrial centre, which is why it is visited by many business travellers. The industry is not perceptible in the magnificent, baroque cityscape of Győr, which won the Europa Nostra prize for the conservation of monuments in 1989. It is an attractive tourist destination. Many young people inundate the atmospheric squares, palaces and museums. There are also many religious travellers since one of Hungary’s most significant sacred relics, the herma of Saint László, the ‘Golden Head’, is located here. (When King László I was canonized in 1192 his bones were lifted from the grave and his skull was first placed into a simple shrine and then onto a so-called herma. The special enamel bust part of the herma was the first known example of decorative enamel technique and later spread all over Europe.) Győr is also a festival city and offers attractive programmes all year round.

Due to the dynamic development of the city, numerous multinational enterprises have chosen it as their Central European centre.

The unique venue for events in the city is the stadium, which was built in such a way that it can provide guests with an all-round service.

The city of rivers

Győr is a city of rivers where 4 rivers (Duna, Rába, Rábca, Marcal) meet. This is the reason water sports are much loved in the city. In addition there is thermal water containing hydrogen sulphide under the city and the excellent baths were built on top of it.

There are several 3 and 4 star hotels in the city and business travellers can count on complete comfort.

A historic site of world heritage

From Győr it only takes a short time to reach Pannonhalma, the stronghold of the Benedictine order. The abbey at Pannonhalma, the centre of the Hungarian Benedictine Congregation, is under the jurisdiction of World Heritage. It is one of the most beautiful examples of a religious place integrating tradition, faith, economics and tourism. The imposing abbey is one of Hungary’s outstanding historic monuments, centre of ecclesiastic and art history, where a reception centre welcomes visitors. There are rooms within the abbey which can be used as venues for events. The Basilica, library, gallery and collection of treasures of the complex of buildings which boasts Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Classicist parts, offer an outstanding experience for visitors. The abbey has its own vineyard and winery, traditionally making mostly of white wine.
