The city of loyalty and freedom near Hungary’s border with Austria, Sopron is one of the most frequently visited Hungarian cities. It is accessible by public highway and train and though it has no airport of its own, it is worth going there by air as Vienna is only 60 km away and the Győr-Pér airport is nearby.

The settlement has existed since Roman times and chose by referendum in 1921 to belong to Hungary rather than to Austria.
Since then it has been called ‘the most loyal city’ (Civitas Fidelissima), and this is celebrated every year on December 14th, the Day of Loyalty. There were good and not so good periods in its history, but the physical aspect of the city was defended throughout. Thus for tourism, it counts as the city of monuments. For its efforts in maintaining tradition, it was awarded the gold medal of the European Prize for the Defence of Monuments in 1975.

Unique sub-Alpine natural environment

The countryside at the foot of the Alps provides the nearly 60 thousand inhabitants with a special natural environment where history can quite literally be closely followed. It is impossible to list the many connections and sights offered by this city. Due to the fresh air of the Alps, the city has long been a favourite place for rest and recuperation. It is also in the midst of wine country and its characteristic wine is Kékfrankos. The biggest rival of wine is the beer made in Sopron, which is very popular with Hungarians.

Many hotels and conference venues

The atmospheric city centre is full of museums and street sights. Because of the large amount of tourism, Sopron has a lot of accommodation available, large and small guest houses and hotels offer their services. The Ferenc Liszt Cultural and Conference Centre is in the city centre; the largest hall there has a capacity of 600 and several smaller ones for 450 and 250 are also available. The hotels also contain many meeting and events rooms.

An unexpected service on offer in the city is dentistry. Numerous clinics and dentists’ surgeries receive patients for treatment.

Excellent for incentive programs

Besides conferences, Sopron is a good location for incentive and team building trips since there are so many sights to be visited in the area. The Fertő region, rich in natural values is nearby; UNESCO recognized it and awarded it the title World Heritage Cultural Landscape. The Fertő-Hanság National Park possesses rare plant and animal life and attracts nature lovers. There is always much traffic on the cycle paths.

Opera performances at the Fertőrákos quarry are a special experience or a concert at the beautifully renovated Fertőd Castle. The latter is a horseshoe-shaped, baroque castle where Haydn himself was the court composer in the service of Count József Esterházy.

Gastronomy too has its specialities in various bean dishes. The locals take pleasure in recommending thick bean stew, bean scones, Sopron noodles and not least bean strudel, bean cake or even bean soup with prunes!

Whatever your programme in Sopron, you should leave time for the participants to walk in the Lövér Hills above the city in the crystal clear air of the foothills of the Alps; afterwards you will be fresher and more lively and above all more motivated to work.
