The city of sunshine is situated in the south of Hungary at the meeting of two great rivers, the Tisza and the Maros, a few km from the borders between Hungary, Serbia and Romania. Szeged has a population of 132 thousand inhabitants and is a fresh, constantly replenished city of students. The peculiar dialect of the locals is one of the most interesting in Hungary.
The city is accessible by highway and train. The airport with grass runways is only suitable for small planes. Public transport in the city consists of trams, trolley buses and buses.
Living with the Tisza river
The life and history of the city has been much influenced by the yellow Tisza, Hungary’s second largest river, rolling through it. Damage caused by flooding of the capricious river has often ravaged the city and changed its life. After the great flood at the end of the XIXth century, the settlement was rebuilt and developed its present-day aspect. The river has since been tamed and this is reassuring for visitors. The name of Szeged has spread far and wide not only because of the unmistakeable Szeged fish soup made with fish caught in the Tisza or the lidos, but the water sports and sensational results in kayak and canoe championships. The districts on the two shores of the river are connected by three bridges.
The emblem of the city is the Cathedral towering in the centre, the Votive Church which hosts the largest Hungarian summer festival, the Szeged Open-air Games, outside it. Exhibitions, markets and festivals are to be found in the vast, shady Széchényi Square. The beautiful, secession buildings beckon the visitor to walk around, the Mediterranean terraces and outdoor places create a unique cityscape.
Food industry and particular local gastronomy
This is one of the Hungarian food industry’s centres. From a gastronomic point of view salami and paprika are connected to the name of the city, but Makó, the capital of onions, is not far either. A good fish soup or other fish dish cannot be left out of the programme.
The eminent university attracts conferences to the city. The largest conference hall is in the modern, all glass Attila József Education and Information Centre belonging to the university; it can accommodate 700 participants. Besides this, the IH Event Centre on the banks of the Tisza and several hotels offer halls for events. There are several traditional and new hotels in the city. The Sunshine Aquapolis with the highest slide park will give pleasure to both young and old.
The region is strongly recommended for conferences as well as incentive trips, because of its many-sided character.
